In celebration of the museum’s 10th anniversary, the Nasher Museum presents some of its most significant works from the contemporary collection. Reality of My Surroundings demonstrates the museum’s ongoing commitment to collecting contemporary work by global artists, with an emphasis on artists of African descent. The exhibition highlights recent acquisitions and works that address the pressing social issues of our day, particularly race, gender, class, globalization and cultural traditions. It includes painting, sculpture, works on paper, photography, video and installation. Artists include Njideka Akunyili, Noah Davis, Dario Escobar, LaToya Ruby Frazier, Hassan Hajjaj, Barkley L. Hendricks, Thomas Hirschhorn, Rashid Johnson, Steve McQueen, Wangechi Mutu, Ebony Patterson, Dario Robleto, Lorna Simpson, Hank Willis Thomas, and Carrie Mae Weems, among others.
